an island in the Lesser Sunda or Nusa Tenggara archipelago separated by the Lombok Strait from Bali on the west and the Alas Strait on the east from Sumbawa. The island is more or less round with a “tail” on the southwest side that is approximately 70 km long. The island's area of 5,435 km² ranks it 108th on the list of islands by area in the world. Its name comes from the Sasak lomboq, which means “straight, honest”. The main city on the island is Mataram City.
